After graduating from the University of Toronto with a degree in Biology and Mathematics, Tarmo Tristan Teng worked in a printing ink manufacuting facility as a lab technician where he studied the industrial processes involved in manufacturing printing inks as well as the relationships between the chemical constituents in inks and their colours. The physical properties of these materials would greatly inform Teng's later works and instilled in him a strong desire to experiment aggressively with both traditional and non-traditional materials in his artistic process. Tarmo Tristan Teng also holds a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design, where he immersed himself in sculpture, drawing, and painting.

His work is held in private collections in Canada and the United States, as well as in the Sony Canada Corporate Collection.
